Build a Haunted House For Your Halloween Party or Organization!
Haunted House InteriorThere are a number of places to set up a haunted house: a gymnasium, a warehouse, or even a private residence. Any location can easily be transformed with a few supplies. Haunted houses usually consist of a maze that leads to various haunted rooms. Use heavy black plastic tarps (more durable), or black landscape plastic (cheaper) for the walls and ceiling. Nail the plastic or tarps to a framework made of 2x4 lumber. Frame walls with 2x4 studs every 24 inches apart along a header and footer board. As in standard construction, you can nail or screw the frame together on the floor, tack the plastic over it, and then erect it. Toenail each vertical board into the header and footer with 2 1/2 inch nails or screws. An alternative would be to nail the boards together with stud framing clips, but these are expensive and usually used for construction that must stand the test of time. For more details on building walls, visit this DIY page. Of course, the walls in the link are for home construction, so you won't use gypsum board (sheetrock) to cover the framework as it's expensive and heavy.
Haunted House FacadeThe entrance to the house prepares visitors for what's inside. You can purchase a 10-foot haunted house facade such as the one picture at the top of this page for between $100 to $200. These premade haunted house entraces are made of foam board that will last the entire season. Either use the premade facade just as it is, or dress it up with additional props such as handmade faux stained glass windows or faux stone work.

The halls and rooms of the maze should contain several elements of surprise. Suggestions include strobe lights, noise makers, actors in costume, animated figures (figures that pop up and scare people), and
