Halloween Scavenger Hunt Ideas: It's Rhyme Time and "It's Your Line" (for Adults)
If you're fond of brainteasers, rhymes and word games that adults enjoy, this is the perfect match for your Halloween scavenger hunt ideas. While it's not designed for kids, you can use our downloadable game to inspire your own Halloween scavenger hunt ideas for a hunt for children. This particular scavenger hunt is terrific if your Halloween celebrations include a little bar hopping! Here's how it works: "It's Your Line" is a printable scavenger hunt game with a story. It's available with our Halloween Printables and Party Games E-book. This Halloween story has missing words and the players must fill in the blanks. The players are provided with a list of words they must find a rhyme to. They take pictures (one camera per team) of these items and arrange the pictures in order on their camera. The object isn't simply to get all the items, but rather to find quality, hilarious items or actions. A time limit promotes creativity and gets everyone back to the party where they can enjoy more fun! Set a reasonable amount of time, but not too long. You want teams to have just enough pressure that they'll have to compromise at least a couple of times on what they find. This game is more fun when all the items are found to complete the story. When teams return, they receive a story with blanks they must fill in with the items they found. Never having seen the story, the outcome can be quite surprising! Then each team will read their version of the story aloud. They can connect their digital camera to a computer monitor or television using a video or AV cable to view the pictures to help illustrate the story. Here's an article to show you how to do this on any television. After each team has presented their story and photos, the host or hostess reads the original story (pages 1 and 2 of the download). Here's an example of how it's played. The list has the word "Bloody Mary" in it. Players must find a "thing" (noun) that rhymes with "Bloody Mary". Examples would be "Harry Larry", "Dictionary", "Woodland Fairy". (One challenge is that it has to be something you can or want to photograph)! Each item on this list has a number beside it. "Duck" for example, has the number 9 beside it. It should be ordered ninth in the series of digital photos. All blanks within the story (pages 3 and 4) with the number 9 will be filled in with the rhyming word; for example: muck. The story reads, "'Let me introduce you to my friend Don', the bartender replies. 'He's a muck hunter. I don't know how you feel about hunting muck. But I personally think they're/it's delicious.'" In the story, you may see, in addition to numbers that indicate where words go, numbers with "+ s" or "+ (s)". This indicates "make plural" or "option to make plural". Get creative. There's no reason you can't substitute a 2 or 3 syllable word for a 1 syllable one. For example, you could rhyme "say bye" with "fly". You can allow half-rhymes: "glide" for "fly". You can also allow players to have the option to find any number (say, 2) of the "original words" instead of rhyming words. This game is one of the most versatile Halloween scavenger hunt ideas because there are many options on how to play. Players can take the stories with them. That is, let everyone see what the story is so they can find better matches for the words. Additionally, this game can be played without doing a photo scavenger hunt. Teams could write in their choices of rhyming words blind (using the scavenger hunt lists without seeing the stories first). And the funniest story wins.
