Buzz LightYear Says it All

Submitted by John Progno of Rochester, NY, USA

Buzz Light Year Costume Ideas

Have Toy Story inspire your costume ideas! When the first Toy Story movie came out it it struck a chord with me. The story, the characters, the graphics and the movie as a whole were incredible.

Halloween has been one of my favorite holidays since childhood. I love the Fall season, the Halloween Parties, the dressing up as characters and of course the treats.

In the Toy Story movie, Woody makes the comment "Who wouldn't love to be a Buzz Lightyear"?! I thought Wow! That would be a great costume.

This submission was an entry in our Halloween Costume Contest. Enter Today!

The problem was how to do it. I went and bought a Buzz Lightyear action figure and started to figure out how to make a costume that would look like the toy. When I was a child, I liked to use cardboard a lot to make costumes. The box robot was one of my favorites. I decided card board would be the best method.

So with lots of card board and a hot melt glue gun I started cutting, gluing and shaping. When the basic construction was done, I covered the cardboard with paper mache and painted. The mid section was made from black vinyl material sewn into tubes. The mask I made from a product called Celluclay, which I glued to a purple fabric hood.

I put a pen laser in the fore arm and took the toy figure apart and installed the sound board with working buttons in the costume. I also made the wings so they could be extended by pulling out just like the toy.

The costume has been fun to wear and draws a huge crowd.

I have also made Buzz's arch rival the Evil Emperor Zurg.

It has been a lot of fun, and I get invited to plenty of Halloween parties every year.

Homemade Halloween Costumes
Inbred Baby Costume Idea

Submitted by Kendra of Missoula, MT USA

This homemade Halloween costume idea is for a crawling baby. Dress him/her in the trashiest most red neck clothes available. You then get an old, creepy baby doll (preferably one that has eyes that open and close) and take it apart.

Sew the body parts to the baby clothes and put them on. Your baby will look as if he/she is inbred and has a Siamese twin. If the doll's eyes open and close then the "sibling" will wink at you while your baby crawls by.

Create a Fruit of the Loom Halloween Costume

Homemade Halloween Costumes Submitted by Dana Goldman of Terry, Mississippi

A great Halloween costume idea is to go as the Fruit of the Loom grapes. It's super easy. Purchase a purple sweat suit (very inexpensively at your local superstore).

Then get a bag of purple balloons. Inflate the balloons and attach them all over the sweat suit. It's as simple as that.

Editor's Note:

Simple and inexpensive homemade Halloween costumes like this are fun to make! You just can't beat it. We think this costume would also be great with a leotard underneath!

The House From Pixar's Up: Homemade Halloween Costumes

Submitted by Mike of Dallas, TX

The House From Pixars Up Homemade Costume Ideas Pixar is becoming an annual Halloween theme in our household. Each year, I try to come up with a costume idea that stems from one of their movies. Wall-E was last year's theme, and this year was the Academy Award nominee, Up. The costumes are inexpensive and fairly easy to make.

To make the house, I cut and hot glued multiple cardboard boxes into the basic shape of a Victorian house. Leaving the bottom open (for ease of putting on), I cut a hole in the roof for a head and two arm holes in each side.

Next, I cut strips of Fun Foam (Hobby Lobby has these for about $.79 per sheet in all different colors) and glued them-slightly overlapping the edges- to look like siding.

The windows and door are cut pieces of foam laid over the top to give the illusion. The roof is a bit more difficult only because the strips are notched to look like individual shingles.

Finally, I added some balloons of different colors to finish the representation. The best thing about this costume is that you can be as detailed as you like, and it just adds to the affect.

Mermaid Riding Side Saddle Costume

Submitted by Alley Anguiano of Tijeras, NM

Mermaid Riding Side Saddle Homemade Costume Idea
I handmade this entire costume for me and my horse. We appeared in the New Mexico State Fair Parade this year, 2010.

A beautiful mermaid riding side saddle on her horse! I have talent!

The costume for the horse was a foam face piece cover with fabric and glued on shells, the netting on the side was to represent fins on my seahorse.

The breast collar was padded and covered with shells and beads. The mane cover was padded and I used coat hanger frames then sewed on glittery fabric by hand. The rump cover was a hand tied net, and the butt strap and the tail was also covered with layers of netting.

My costume as the mermaid consisted of a handmade halter-top covered with shell breast covers, beads and sequins. My fin skirt was hand made to fit over an English side saddle by placing a slit in the back which when mounted was not seen. My head piece was done with an over the head main form. Then, using wire I made it look like fins on top by adding netting in a Roman helmet style.

To finish the piece I added shells and beads. Face paint completed the look. I must admit my horse actually allowed all this on him with no problems! Enjoy my creation!

Editor's Note

We have to agree - riding side saddle in a mermaid costume takes true talent! Not to mention the talent it takes to create homemade Halloween costumes like these!

Life is a Roller Coaster: Homemade Halloween Costume Ideas

Life is a Roller Coaster Costume
Submitted by Mary Kendrick of Chantilly, VA USA

My husband, the most creative man alive, built these roller coaster ride costumes for the annual Hallowfest hosted by our good friends. Every year, he does it up big, but this year may have been the biggest!

He made the coaster cars by hand out of PVC plastic formboard, foam and a lot of sweat and labor. It was by the far the biggest hit of the party. We were able to "detach" so we could mingle more easily and even discard as the night went on. It was too much fun!

Big Bug Small Budget: Homemade Halloween Costumes

Big Bug Costume on a Small Budget
The secret to building a great Halloween costume on the cheap is in using the stuff you already have.

This giant praying mantis is 9 feet long and weighs 11 pounds. The head is made from a bicycle helmet. The eyes are metal strainers.

The legs are some wire from abandoned political campaign signs covered with pipe insulation. The body is a metal garden dowel wrapped in plastic fencing and covered with fabric. The whole contraption is supported by an old back pack frame and a couple of braces made from shop-vac parts. The little trick-or treater is my daughter Sienna, friend to all insects.

My Husband the He/She Costume: Homemade Halloween Costume Ideas

Submitted by Faye of Burleson, Tx

My Husband the He/She Costume

My husband doesn't like to do anything halfway so he said, "I have to come up with a costume that I know no one will have one like it."

We put our heads together and came up with half man and half woman.

My husband wears a beard so that meant he would have to shave half of his beard, his arm and put finger nails on. I cut his jeans and put half a skirt on the "she" side, (he shaved his one leg). We went to the thrift store got him a hat, bra, blouse, stockings, and ladies shoes.

It took some sewing on my part but he was the hit of the party, plus won first prize.
