Mothers Day GamesMothers Day party games are a fun way to celebrate mom at your Mother’s Day Cookout or Mother’s Day brunch!
Games for Mother’s DayHere at Themed-Party-Ideas.com, we’re always getting requests for party ideas and games for particular events. We love receiving these requests, because it stirs up new party ideas that we hadn’t thought of before.
Here’s one such request:
"We are having a big Mother’s Day cookout, and I was looking for some games that would be nice to play for our guest. Can y’all help me out with this one please! Thanks for all you do."
Mother’s Day Cookout. What a great idea! Thank you for writing in. I’m sure others are looking for Mothers Day games too. So here are some ideas that hope you’ll enjoy! Most Mothers Day celebrations include guests of all ages, so we’ll just try to hit everything.
Relay RacesPopular relay races include:
- Wheelbarrow Races:
One person plays the part of the wheelbarrow by walking on his hands. Another participant plays the part of the person pushing the wheelbarrow by holding his feet. Players race against another team to the finish line.
- Sack Races:
Each person gets inside a gunny sack and races to the finish line.
- Egg in Spoon Race:
Players start with a plastic spoon and egg. They try to balance the egg on the spoon while being the first to cross the finish line.
Of course, all relay races come with a big dose of sideline cheering!
More Adult and Child Friendly Outdoor GamesOther popular outdoor games that both adults and children enjoy playing are:
- Lawn Bowling
- Egg Toss: Players form two lines. Teams of two face each other. Toss a raw egg back and forth, taking a pace back after each time you toss.
- Tailgate Toss (also known as Cornhole)
- Limbo (always a funny game for adults and kids)
- Pinatas (kids just love the idea of a windfall of candy and cheap toys!)
- Nature Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items kids can find outdoors (you can also hide items for more variety). For example, a leaf with five points (not poison ivy!), an acorn, pinecone, something fuzzy, something pink, a smooth rock, etc. The first team to find the items on the list wins.
Trophies make the tournament lots of fun. There’s no need to spend a lot on trophies...you can usually get first place ribbons at dollar type stores.
I’ve also found tons of discarded trophies at thrift stores and "repurposed" them with a little creativity (people usually find this pretty funny!).
Playing a few relaxing games will help you include everyone in on the fun. They can easily be played while sitting and mingling.
Mums the Word"Mums the Word" is always a fun game. Create a forbidden word that’s off limits for the party. For Mother’s Day, you might choose the word, "mother". Get creative with the word, it should be a common word to make the game a challenge.
Give everyone a plastic necklace (you can use anything, the necklaces are just easy to keep up with).
Each time someone says the forbidden word they must give their necklace to the person they’re speaking with.
The person with the most necklaces at the end of the party wins.
Create a game called "Famous Quotes". Come up with 10 to 20 famous quotes about mothers. I suggest the website: Quote Garden.
Print the quotes on a sheet of paper, but leave off the end of the quote. For example:
"A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces _______________." ~Tenneva JordanPass the game sheets out to guests (including your mom) and have the guests finish the quotes with what they think the quotes might say.
When everyone is done, have the guests share what they wrote. Then read the actual quote aloud.
"A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie." ~Tenneva Jordan
It’s always funny to see what crazy things people come up with!
What’s in a Name?Write your mother’s first and last name on a sheet of paper using one letter per line followed by a blank. For example if you mom’s name is Celesta Jones it would look like:
- C ________________
- E ________________
- L ________________
- E ________________
- S ________________
- T ________________
- A ________________
Print a game sheet for each player. Have guests fill in each blank with a description that they think matches Mom’s character or personality.
- C alm
- E nergetic
- L oving
- E legant
- S illy
- T imely
- A lways There
The person with the most points at the end of the game wins!
