The pirate party can be for all ages: for boys or girls. For a girl, you could use the pink Jolly Roger flag instead of the white one. If you have a lake or a pond or even the beach, this works the best for a child.

But a local pool works just as well. I did this for my niece for her 6th birthday and she loved it. We rented a small boat (but you can also get a raft from Wal-mart for about $25). We dressed the boat up like a pirate boat. More of Chasity's Pirate Party Ideas.

We added a Jolly Roger flag, which you can make out of a pillow case and some paint or spray paint or anything really, like stickers. Since we rented our boat we covered it with some black fabric to make it look like the "Black Pearl" from Pirates of the Caribbean.

We also rented a fog machine. This is wonderful for sunset or at night. We blew the fog over the water so about 8pm, as it got dark, we started playing some music from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie and had a few of the dads come sailing on the boat dressed like Pirates.

Some of the younger kids were a little scared but we figured this would happen, so we had the dads throw out plastic rings and beaded necklaces from the boat. When the dads docked, they handed one of the children a pirate hat, patch eye and a treasure map. We gave these to the youngest ... but you give them at random, or to the birthday kid, or whoever.

We had all the kids go on a scavenger hunt for the treasure hunt. Items included: chocolate coins, plastic tiaras, beaded necklaces, and plastic rings. Note: before the hunt begins, you should probably hand all the kids an empty bag so they can carry their treasure in something.

This party does take some planning, but it is one that everyone will remember, and even the adults will have fun.

For preschoolers, you can even use their favorite TV shows (i.e. a "backyardagins" themed pirate party).

Things you will need for your Pirate Party:

Pirate hats
Patch eyes
Beaded necklaces
Plastic rings
Plastic tiaras
Chocolate coins
Goody bags(or any kind of bag)
Paint
Stickers
Pillow case
Fabric
Fog machine
A water source
A boat or a raft
Pirates music
Paper to draw up the map
and some kind of treasure chest (a toy box works wonderful or even a cardboard box)

Don't be afraid to ask the other parents for help. When I did, they were all very eager to help me with everything.
