Important Pumpkin Carving Tip: Use printable pumpkin stencils that you can download and print right now. They make complicated designs a cinch!

First, cut open the top of your pumpkin and remove the pulp. Then pin the stencil to your pumpkin.

With stick pins, an ice pick, an Exacto knife or other sharp device, score the pumpkin along the dotted lines so that when you remove the stencil, you'll be able to see where the lines were.

Remove the stencil but keep it in view for reference. Use a knife to remove the grey sections of the pumpkin stencil.

Some patterns are much more advanced than others. If you choose the most difficult ones - the monster, the witch, the spider, or the web, for example - be armed with patience and care. These patterns may require you to remove sections a little piece at a time, rather than all at once.

The drill method of pumpkin carving is a way to produce a sophisticated, beautiful pattern in a short period of time. A cordless drill with variable speeds works best. Because most drill bits are not made of stainless steel, make sure you carefully clean and dry your drill bit after you're done so that it doesn't rust.

Pumpkin Carving Tips for the Occassional Mistake:

If you make a bit of an error, you can fix it. Say your pumpkins tooth fell out while carving, take a toothpick and drive half the toothpick into the pumpkin and the other half into the tooth. This may require more than one toothpick, but it's an easy fix!
