Talking like a pirate makes for a fun party game. No, there aren't any prizes just the pure pleasure of sounding completely silly.

Talk Like A Pirate: 5 Essential Grammar Rules

1. Double negatives are doubly acceptable. Example: "No, Nay ye be a vermin!"
2. Drop the "g" when ending a word. This concept is crucial to the pirate vocubulary. Example: "Sailin' the high seas" and "Walkin' the Plank"
3. Begin as many sentences as possible with the phrase, "Argh!" in a gutteral voice.
4. Forget everything you ever learned about correct verb tense. Use the verb, "Be" in place of the verb "is", "was", "are" and "were". Examples: "I be hungry" or "The Scallywag be fearsome!"
5. Use these common pirate phrases whenever possible: "Jolly Roger" (skull/crossbones flag), "Walk the Plank", "Scurvy Dog" (insult), "Yo-ho-ho", "Aye!", "Ahoy, Me Hearty!"

Second, if you're dressed as a pirate for a birthday party or Halloween party, knowing "pirate speak" creates an authentic disguise.

Finally, being able to speak like a pirate impresses friends, family and party guests! It can easily be made into a party game, and it generally brings good cheer to others.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is September 19th. No, it's not a government sanctioned holiday ... and you don't get a day off work. Arrrgh!
